Now the author is building a platform for testing, using the currently excellent Core i7 980X processor, which has six cores and twelve threads. The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9, with up to 7 PCI-E X16 graphics card slots, theoretically capable of inserting 7 single-slot graphics cards, but in fact, high-end graphics cards are dual-slot designs, so only 4 can be inserted.

In terms of graphics cards, there is one AMD dual-core card king HD6990, four single-core card kings HD6970, NVIDIA single-core card king GTX580, and various mid-range and low-end graphics cards. We will test their mining performance one by one.
In order to be able to insert as many graphics cards as possible, the test platform chose Gigabyte GA-X58-UD9, which has up to seven PCI-E X16 graphics card slots, theoretically allowing up to six single-slot graphics cards and one dual-slot graphics card to be inserted. Unfortunately, I did not have a high-end single-slot graphics card at hand, so in the end, I could only insert four dual-slot graphics cards simultaneously.
With multiple graphics cards and an excellent six-core CPU, the power supply must also be powerful. We chose the Anetek MAXREVO 1500W ultra-powerful power supply to ensure the stability of the entire platform.
● Intel Core i7 2600K (4 cores 8 threads): 19.2Mhash/s
Firstly, I ran a mining test on my personal computer with Core i7 2600K. This CPU was not overclocked and could boost to 3.8GHz from the default 3.4GHz. A new CPU miner was created, with all 8 virtual cores checked, and the CPU was fully loaded during mining, achieving a final performance of 19.2Mhash/s.
● NVIDIA GTX460 (336 CUDA Core): 55.5Mhash/s
Then I used my GTX460 1GB graphics card, which is a reference card with 336 stream processors, operating at 1350MHz, to run mining programs in CUDA mode, achieving a score of 55.5Mhash/s, which is 2.9 times that of i7-2600K.
● AMD HD6750 (720SP): 156.3Mhash/s
Next, I switched to an AMD card, and the mainstream HD6750 was able to achieve a score of 156.3Mhash/s, which is three times the performance of GTX460 and eight times that of i7-2600K!
● NVIDIA GTX580 (512 CUDA Core): CUDA performance is better than OpenCL
It seems that the performance gap between NVIDIA’s and AMD’s cards is indeed quite large. After switching to the excellent single GPU card GTX580 from NVIDIA, it was found that such a powerful graphics card could not outperform the HD6750. What is the reason for this?
NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX580, in addition to supporting OpenCL mode, also has a CUDA miner available. Under CUDA mode, the performance of GTX580 is improved by as much as 30% compared to OpenCL mode. Not only is the performance improved, but the power consumption during mining is also reduced, from 366 watts to 329 watts. This indicates that the algorithm efficiency of the CUDA miner is superior to that of the OpenCL miner, but due to the limitations of its computational power, it is still not as good as the A card with a large number of stream processors.
Then, the author found the mainstream graphics cards available and tested their Bitcoin mining performance one by one, and the final results are organized as follows:
Below, the author will make a brief analysis:
1. The HD6990 has two GPUs, the core frequency is exactly the same as that of the single-core HD6970, so the mining performance is doubled. In fact, the HD6990 needs to open two miners to distribute to the two GPUs for joint calculation.
2. The stream processor of the previous generation HD5870 of AMD is slightly more than that of HD6970, but the core frequency is slightly lower, so the mining performance of the two generations of flagship single cards is almost the same. To know that the game performance of the VLIW4 architecture HD6970 is stronger than that of the VLIW5 architecture HD5870, but the mining performance seems to depend only on the theoretical floating-point computing ability, and has nothing to do with the architecture and efficiency.
3. The HD6790 with Barts core has a 256Bit memory bandwidth, twice as wide as the 128Bit HD6770. But both have the same mining performance, so the memory bandwidth frequency has no effect on performance. The only factor affecting performance is the number and frequency of stream processors.
4. The excellent single-card GTX580 of NV is not as good as HD6750, but it is much stronger than the CPU, after all, it also has hundreds of cores.
Then let’s take a look at the total power consumption of the entire machine during mining, which involves the issue of return on investment:
Since the total power consumption of the entire machine includes power supply, motherboard, memory, CPU, hard disk, etc., it cannot be seen in proportion, but only in the numerical difference, here is for reference only.
As everyone knows, at the same price and level, N-Card and A-Card are roughly the same in terms of 3D game performance, with each other having the upper hand in different games, and neither having a significant leading advantage. But why is the gap between N-Card and A-Card so large in Bitcoin mining calculations?
The VLIW5 stream processor architecture of the HD5870/6870 series
This group of 5 is actually a traditional Shader (shader) in the sense.
It is believed that everyone knows that A-Card has a massive number of stream processors, and the number of stream processors on a top-level A-Card is more than three times that of an N-Card. AMD uses VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) 5D/4D SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data Stream) architecture, which can produce a massive scale of computational units with less transistor overhead.
NVIDIA has abandoned the traditional Shader architecture design since the DX10 era and developed a brand new MIMD (Multi Instruction, Multi Data Stream) architecture. All computational units are scattered, so each stream processor can reach a higher frequency, achieving higher efficiency. However, the cost is that the transistor consumption is relatively high, with NVIDIA spending a large number of transistors on the instruction发射器和distribution units, resulting in the number of stream processors in the NVIDIA architecture being far less than that of the AMD architecture for GPUs of the same scale.
In short, AMD is brute-forcing stream processors without considering computational efficiency, while NVIDIA has greatly improved computational efficiency but has fewer stream processors. The end result is that both sides have their strengths, almost on a par in various 3D games, while in general computing applications, the N-card has an advantage, but the leading advantage of the N-card may not be efficiency issues, but rather good software optimization and program development.
However, there is a situation where the N-card is at a disadvantage, if an application does not have particularly complex instructions, but only brute-force algorithms or a large amount of data to process, this mindless operation is most suitable for AMD’s architecture to handle, because it has an absolute advantage in theoretical floating-point computational power, without considering computational efficiency issues. The massive data will feed every stream processor, and they will not have any idle time, naturally approaching the theoretical value of performance.
The password cracking performance of the A-card is also far ahead of the N-card
The Bitcoin miner uses SHA-256, which is a secure hash function invented by the United States National Security Agency, generally used for encryption and decryption of passwords. This algorithm performs a large number of 32-bit integer right shift operations, which can be implemented by a single hardware instruction on AMD GPUs, while on NVIDIA GPUs, it requires three hardware instructions to simulate (2 shifts + 1 addition). Just this one feature brings AMD an additional 1.7 times computational efficiency advantage (about 1900 instructions to execute the SHA-256 compression operation, compared to NVIDIA’s about 3250 instructions).
In this way, AMD’s higher floating-point computational ability combined with algorithm efficiency advantages, the performance of AMD GPUs in password cracking and Bitcoin mining is about 3 times higher than that of NVIDIA GPUs!
At first, the author filled the platform with four HD6970 graphics cards, and found that the performance of single-card or multi-card did not affect each other after running, with very stable speed, fluctuating around 35xMhash/s, so the total computational power is 1.426Ghash/s.
Mining performance with four HD6970s
Later, a dual-core HD6990 was found, replacing one HD6970 with it, so the entire platform now has five Cayman GPUs running at the same frequency, pushing performance to a new level. The computational power of each GPU remains stable at 35xMhash/s, with the total computational power reaching 1.782Ghash/s!
Mining performance when using three HD6970s and one HD6990
The next day, a colleague found another HD5970, so the configuration of HD6990+HD5970+HD6970+HD6970 is a four-card six-GPU setup, which should be more powerful in performance. Unfortunately, there were no four HD6990s at hand, otherwise it would have been the ultimate configuration!

The total computing power of four cards and six GPUs has broken through 2Ghash/s!
Although the stream processors of HD5970 are more than those of HD6990, due to the lower default frequency, the computing power is not as good as HD6990. However, after replacing HD6970 with HD5970, the GPU count increases by one, and the total computing power reaches a new high!
According to the data monitored by the BTC Guild website, the actual computing power is almost the same as that displayed by the client, but the fluctuation range is relatively large, which may be related to internet speed and the difficulty of data packet calculation.
